| Review: | Nothing but corrupt crooks looking to cheat you! Late last year we started booking our vacation to the Florida Keys to go in April, 2011. My wife started to get sick in January and even sicker in February. On Valentine's Day she went to our Family doctor who found fluid on her lung and enlarged lymphnodes. After a battery of tests during the next two weeks she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was then hospitalized and we had to cancel this trip. Well the crooks at Access America determined that this was pre-existing condition because she had two doctor visits with our family doctor late last year. One in October for a pulled muscle in her chest and one in December for Bronchitis. I would like Access America to explain and prove that this was treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. They can back it up to me or back it up in court. good luck scumbags! If you come across this company while booking your travel, think twice, they will steal your premium dollars and cheat you out of any claims. | Review: | No Respect for the Military I was scheduled to take my 2 weeks of Military Rest & Recuperation (R&R) Leave from Afghanistan, during which time I was going to take my family to Disney World. However, I was stranded in Afghanistan for several days due to the temporary cancellation of military charter flights back to the States. I attempted to file a claim with Access America, since the delay in Afghanistan caused me to cancel my American Airlines trip and Disney Resort reservations. The two Access America customer service reps I spoke with barely let me explain my situation before telling me “no”. I also spoke with a Supervisor, who did the same. | Review: | They were the best! We recently traveled away from home for a week. Two days before we were due to fly home, my husband got really sick. We had to change our flights to come home. They were extremely helpful on the phone and told us what to do. They immediately sent us claim forms. My husband went to the doctor and had a bad virus. The doctor said he was right to go home. | Review: | VERY TOUGH TO GET A REFUND!! After a cancellation due to illness, I did get a claim refunded. HOWEVER, it took two months' of calling them and resubmitting documents. I RECOMMEND you keep calling them regarding your claim; get the NAME of the person you talked to; make a note of the date and time you talked as well as what was said and just keep after them! ASK TO TALK TO A SUPERVISOR IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY. Never lose your cool, just keep talking calmly-- you know what you're entitled to! Because me friend had stomach pain in July and made reservation in September they denied claim.She was diagnosed with renal cancer and latter died after reservation in september. I rented a truck on-line w/Budget, the same time I booked the airline tickets for my company's over the road technicians, headed to Canada. On the Budget website it ask do you want insurance so I clicked yes. Oh What a Mistake! It turns out the insurance company on this policy was Access America - such a Scam of a Company!! Needless to say, our guys were in an accident, and Access America say they don't cover Trucks!!!! They took our money knowing we rented a truck and then said too bad it was in the terms & conditions on the rental agreement web-page! How is this possibly legal to take money for insurance you have no intentions of covering??? Went to BBB, no help what so ever. So I thought I would post to warn as many people as possible, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ACCESS AMERICA INSURANCE, THEY ARE NOTHING BUT A SCAM COMPANY, and will not pay off on your claim(s). | Review: | Access America - Scam Purchased Travel Insuracne from Access America, They kept on giving reason after reason and form after Form to deny the claim. they sent me a form to be filled by the doctor, Everyone i am sure knows that when you go to a doctors office, the average wait time is 20 minutes, and Access America sends a form(4 pages) to be filled by the doctor, I am sure they are not stupid but smart in designing thier forms since no doctor will ever fill up a 4 page form for a pateint even if its 100% Geniune since no one has that kind of time. Further i still provided them the doctors letter provided on the Doctors stationary stating the reason of illness, but still Access America wtihout even understanding the medication or the diagnosis declied the claim, Iam 100% sure the Representative didnt even know what the medican was for and wasnt able to even undestand the diagnosis, but still made her judgemet in 5 seconds without even reading the contents saying you will not get the refund, its a 100% SCAM, also i spoke to other members on the forum and asked them did they get a refund, only the individuals who have sent notices from thier attorneys have got refunds, wihch shows that they wait till they get sued and then they refund. | Review: | Specialists in making sure you won't be insured I planned a work trip to the Bay Area, but my work got cancelled a week before my departure date. I called, got a nice man on the phone, but no cooperation. They would not cover my airfare cost ($246). Reason: I did not lose my job. Me: "I am self employed. I don't loose my job!" Them: "Did you go out of business?" Me: "No. One job I had got cancelled. Therefore I am not going this time." Them: "Only if you close your business" I called three times, but still no way to a get any refund at all. Sent them two emails, and filed complain through their online service. I had filed a claim and they stated that they had lost my papers so I mailed them 2 more times. I then call them to give them the information and they had said that they had lost that as well. | Review: | FRUSTRATED BEYOND BELIEF! I consider myself a nice, honest and trustworthy person, the kind of person that likes to be treated fairly. Access America dose not treat anyone fairly! Our family (my husband and myself, my sister and her husband, and my mother and father) booked a cruise and had to cancel because my nephews wife became so ill she was hospitalized and he had to stay in the hospital with her. They have a 1 year old that they desperately needed us to help care for while they were trying to figure out what was wrong with Cassie. The doctors finally determined she was suffering from gastroparesis (her stomach is paralized and she is unable to digest food)she has lost over 50 lbs since the end of June. The final payment for our cruise was made June 29th so our policy should have gone into effect on that date. Access America claims our policy went into effect on July 6th and since Cassie got sick at the end of June it is considered a pre-existing condition. What a crock! Before we cancelled our trip my mom contacted Access America and was assured that we would have no problem getting our money back she spoke to Eric and was pleased to learn there would be no problem getting a refund. She trusted him! It seems that was our first mistake. We had all our documents, the letter from the Dr. the insurance claim forms filled out, the whole nine yards.We didn't hear anything for a while. All this time checking our mailboxes waiting for our refunds which never arrived. I called Access America to check on our claims and was told they never received our paperwork. Not mine, not my sisters, not my parents. Wow! that's amazing that they didn't get any of our claims. We bagan to smell a rat! After all this confusion and many many phonecalls I was assured they did in fact have our claim forms and our claims were denied! I did some research and found that no matter how honest and thorough you are with this company YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK!!!!! We had to cancel the trip because my brother in law became ill in the hospital (was in a coma). I submitted to claim forms and was told by access america (via email), another form had to be completed by the physician. Since my brother in law was in a coma, the hospital/doctors would not complete it due to HIPA laws. My brother in law never recovered and passed away in November. I contacted access american to see if I supplied the death certificate with his name on it and this time was told no they would not process the claim, they still needed the form. So after several weeks I finally contacted them to inquire and they told me they needed more documents so I sent them the next day. Again they didn't tell me they needed more, then announced it was only secondary insurance and probably wouldn't cover the claim, so they demanded more paperwork. Even though I got all the needed papers and documents from doctors stating that she is not adviced to travel, the insuarance company rejected my claim right away. On September 8, 2010, I purchased a travel protection policy from Access America for travel on October 29-31, 2010. I later changed the dates with American Airlines and paid a penalty to change the dates to November 12, 2010. I reviewed the Access America policy number AMR00001801066 which was issued on September 8, 2010 to figure out if I had to contact Access America to change the original dates. There was no reference in the contract to contact Access America to change dates. On November 10, 2010, I contacted American Airlines and Access America to cancel my revised travel date of November 12, 2010 because of a seriously ill family member who later passed away on November 12, 2010. | Review: | Absolute Rip-Off This company is misleading and dishonest. They basically put so many stipulations in their policies, that they can get around paying almost any claim. For example, their website talks about weather delays. They only pay a claim if the airlines do not fly for a full 24 hours or more. How often does that happen? The airport was closed for 4 hours and the airline could not get me to my destination prior to the time my return flight was departing. | Review: | BUYER BEWARE Access America Insurance is a rip off I purphased my tickets through Orbitz to make a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in March of 2010. At the time Orbitz was using Access America Travel Insurance and Assistance as their travel protection insurance coverage provider. Being cautious, after having to cancel 2 trips due to deathes in the family I bought their insurance. MAJOR MISTAKE, and I should have known it from the poor experience I had with them last year. I had to cancel and reschedule a trip that my husband and I were to have taken, but my husband company called an emergency meeting that he HAD to be at. Access America told me they would not reimburse us because they do not covera loss of travel due to business complications. Well dumie me bought their insurance again to cover your trip to Puerto Rico this March for a trip scheduled for May 13. As it turns out I had to go to a regularly scheduled neuerology appoinment (quarterly visit), on may 10, at which time my doctor informed me I could not fly due to my neck giving problems at the time. I have had this condiction since 1987 and have NEVER been told I could not travel because of it, no matter how painful it was. Usually I get on the plan, take a dose of my pain medication and sleep through the flight. However this time MY NEUROLOGIST was very worried about the level of pain that I was experiencing, and was afraid I "might" wind up having to go to an emergency room, if the problem got any worse. He told me it would be better for me to cancel our trip and reschedule at a later date, because he didn't want me to wind up in a foreign hospital and out of touch'reach of his office. So I called Oribitz and cancelled our trip on his determination. I then called and wrote to Access america and told them I had had to cancel our trip for the present, due to a medical denial to travel by my doctor. My doctor had aletter typed up for me the day of my visit with him, on May 10, stating that I could not travel due to problems with my neck. I filled out Access America reimbursement forms and attched the letter from my doctor. After more than a month I got a letter back from Access America saying they needed more informationand that the reason for my cancellation had to have been with in 72 hours of our time of travel, and so I was denied. I called and informed them that I was within the 72 hour period of travel, and again I refilled out their forms and had my doctor wrote a second letter to send to them. Once again more than a month goes by and nothing from Access America, so I called the company (I believe this was my 3 or4 call to them). The young man on the phone was very nice and said he would have someone get in touch with me ASAP. Two weeks or more later I get another letter from Access America stating that this time I was denied because my condiction was preexciting. Since my condiction had NEVER kept me from traveling by plane before I called them back , and informed them that although Yes, this was a preexciting condiction, one I'd had since 1987, it had never kept me from traveling by plane before. Once again their agent was very polite and I was told they would chek into it, and Access America would be back in touch with me soon. several weeks leater I once again recieve A letter informing me that due to their policy I was denied because it stated that they did not cover loss of travel due to preexciting medical condictions. I will readily admit that when I called them back this time I was neither polite nor cordial as I had been in they past, as a matter a fact I was down right right mad and angry, and I let them know it. I spoke to one of their supervisors, named Johanna Sydnor who told me I could go on-line to post a complaint and APPEAL my case. So far I have written letters of compliant to the BBB, and two directly to Access America, but have yet to find their web site where I can appeal their findings. I am however informing all my friends, aquiantes and anyone else I can reach through Facebook, and twitter NOT to purchase trvel insurance though Access America because they are a rip off and will find any reason Not to cover travelers who have to cancel trips using their company. And from what I have seem on two web sites I am not the only person who has had trouble collecting from Access America. To bad because it is consimer like us that make or break a business like theirs. Wish me luck, because I am not giving up until I get ALL my money reimbursed!!!! Comments [ 1 ] |

| Review: | Better hope $200 covers you if stranded We were stranded in Barcelona because our airline canceled our flight and could not rebook us for three days. Hotel and meals cost us $1200 and all we got was $200 each for "Trip delay". Granted that's what the confirmation letter said but if I had paid attention I would have known the insurance is not worth the paper it's on. I finally faxed every sheet individually so I would have proof that I sent each page. I then demanded I receive my payment within 10 days or that I will contact an attorney. We cancelled our vacation to NYC because my 17 year old son suffered a herniated disk after we book our trip. They kept insisting our doctor noted a pre-existing condition even after a clarification letter from the doctor indicating there where "well child care check ups." My 17 year old sneezed, which started his severe back pain. AA kept asking for documents, does not reply right away, trying to tire you...so you can go away. Now they wanted to review my sons medical records! I responded unless you are a medical doctor...no way. Small claims court he we come. Advised to others...Stay, stay away from this company. | Review: | THIS COMPANY IS JUST A SCAM This is the worst travel insurance you could ever get. They make you submit a bunch of supporting documents to process a claim and then turn around and not cover a single thing. I submitted a claim after my wallet was stolen in Italy, a couple of weeks later I called them to make sure they had received the supporting documents and the representative reassured me that I would be covered. I called again two weeks later and was informed the claim was denied but the representative was unable to give me an explanation of the reasons for deniying it, she said I would receive a letter which never arrived so I called again two weeks later and they said they would mail me another letter but of course it never came either. This is just a scam, they are quick to take your money but won't cover anything if you actually have to submit a claim. | Review: | They will find ways not to pay, Scam company Flights delay for over ten hours. Contract stated 500 dollars cover for that. Small print in the booklet stated 150 dollars maximum. First lie right there. Unless you spent 150 dollars while you are being delay they don't pay you a dime. I missed my friends' wedding have to stay an extra day so at least I can see them after they are back from their honeymoon. All the extra expenses from taxi to food and extra for changing the flight extra Hotel cost and missed work. None is excepted by them. Next time when you are stuck in the airport for over 6 hours. Only way to get reimbursed is to spend 150 dollars buy erevybody a round in the bar , order the most expensive meal and get the receipt then they have no excuse not to pay up. I was delayed overnight in Miami on my way to Nicaragua. It was American Airlines fault. I had a few costs associated with meals, taxis, and cancellation at the hostel. I did an online submission when I got back and it was approved the same day. I received a check in about 10 days. The only downside was the first person I talked to on the phone was not very helpful. I was eligible for coverage according to my policy (which is ridiculously strict and limited)!! They claim right there on the home page of their website that you are covered in case of emergencies, something as common as your child getting the flu. I had a serious medical problem ARISE (while under coverage) that I now need to receive treatment for. This not only affects me, but also my entire family. After seeing the doctor, he immediately suggested that I do not take the trip. Access America's Customer Service is very friendly and they give off this feeling of assurance that "everything is going to be ok." Then when you file the claim, they ask for more & more information beyond what the actual claim forms request. They're just LOOKING FOR A REASON NOT TO COVER YOU!! If your child gets the flu, you better be prepared for a full out investigation as to WHY your child got the flu. It will somehow be your fault, or the child's fault, or the school's fault. THIS HOLDS TRUE TO EVEN MORE SERIOUS SITUATIONS THAT ARE OUT OF YOUR CONTROL OR SITUATIONS/CONDITIONS THAT YOU DID NOT FORSEE & HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF!! No mention is made of the fact that the airline are using is or is NOT covered by their insurance. We took out rental insurance from them (via Orbitz) for a trip to Costa Rica, and upon arriving there, was told at the rental counter that the insurance “was not valid” in Costa Rica. We spoke with Access America support staff upon our return, and they said that their insurance is often not acknowledged as valid in Latin American countries, and promised a full refund after I fax them the bill. A few days after faxing, I called and was told I wouldn’t be getting a refund. So I spoke with a manager who again said I’d receive a refund once I sent a cleaner copy of the rental receipt. After emailing them a copy, I received an email stating that they couldn’t refund me since I’d requested a refund more than 10 days after purchasing the policy. Of course, no one mentioned this when I bought the insurance 3 months prior to our trip. And, why didn’t any of the 3 employees I spoke with mention this while as they asked for receipts, promised refunds, and generally gave me the run-around??!! No refund ever came. | Review: | Contact your airline about this scam I bought travel insurance with Access America for a flight from Boston to Detroit. I had to cancel three days beforehand because of a medical problem involving a close relative, which led to his being charged by the police with a crime in another city. When I tried to file a claim with Access America for the cancelled flight, I was first put on hold for over 45 minutes, then was told (immediately) that this event wasn't covered under the policy. I sent an email to Delta Airlines urging that they discontinue their association with Access America, because AA is a fraud and Delta's association with them is damaging to Delta's reputation. The best thing we can do as consumers about this scam is to warn others on websites like this, and urge airlines and travel web sites like Travelocity, Orbitz, Cheapfares, etc. to disassociate themselves completely from Access America. | Review: | In process of claim right now - will update soon Booked a trip for my family and I from San Diego to Madrid...booked the tickets on AA August of 2009 for travel in June 2010 (way in advance) so I purchased a $24 Access America policy for my wife and I, but not for the kids. Main reason was in case of striking European transit workers - as well as trip interruption, etc. I DID READ the entire policy, which took roughly half an hour, to make sure that they were not "supplimental" coverage, and also called Access America to make sure they were not "supplimental / secondary" coverage - they assured me they were not and the policy does not indicate anywhere that they are either. Life was good - I bought the policies. The day of travel to Madrid, incredibly, American Airlines lost my wifes luggage and mine! It would be 3 cities and almost 4 days later that we would be reunited with our bags. The day of landing, once I knew we had no luggage and were in for more than a 24-hour delay (easy to determine since AA only has one flight a day into Madrid from Dallas, so >24 hour delay was assured we were told) I called Access America again and they reconfirmed / reassured me (on a speakerphone call listened to by my family and the American Airlines baggage rep) that they were not "secondary coverage" which I was specifically interested in, because I knew what would happen next. I knew American Airlines would eventually pay us "something" for clothing and essentials that we needed to purchase, but that it would take them 4 months - the major airlines are all criminals when it comes to the timeliness of a claim like that, and they hope that by inundating a person with paperwork requests and re-requests, most claims just fizzle away due to lack of stamina or ability for average people to stick with the claims process. I did not want this from my travel insurance. So, purchase a LOT of clothing, since we had lost a lot of clothing, and my wife was having a bit of a meltdown over our first family international vacation (which we don't speak Spanish) being kicked off with nada for essentials etc. Plus we were stuck - there is no way to find the "good deal boutique stores" when you are trapped in Spain and asking the local hotel people where to go purchase clothing and esentials - they all point to the biggest mall on the map and smile. I would too! So anyway, we spend a fair amount comfortable in the knowledge that Access America covers each of us $500 per person. No matter what. According to them. 4 days later we meet our luggage, and life is grand because we have a bit of new clothing, etc. and have a week of vacation left, plus I am comforted knowing we were not hosed on the $1500 we spent on stuff due to no bags. I get home and file the claim with American Airlines and Access America. So now, for the FIRST TIME EVER, Access American suddenly says they are "secondary coverage" and will happily take my claim, but have no plans to pay until American Airlines gets done with their claim. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I have them open up their FINE PRINT policy and show me this - IT DOESN'T EXIST AND THEY CAN'T SHOW ME!! However they nicely indicate that there is a line in the policy way down that indicates any reimbursement from American Airlines is taken out of the reimbursement for the Access America policy. Well here is the legal catch - that is fine with me - if American Airlines pays me my entire claim in 3 to 4 months, I am happy to pay Access America back the $500 each for my wife and I that I was expecting. However, I am pretty sure that this does not entitle them to wait to pay me based on their policy wording and the CLEAR repeated message from their reps which I documented. So, I am a week into this, and will be notifying them of all this in writing this week. I will post / update on this site how this ends - if they pay me immediately as I expect, then I will be overall pleased, because candidly as another person accurately posted, these are cheap policies so obviously they are going to push back on almost every claim - all insurance is a version of a scam for the masses, with only the somewhat persistent and informed customers getting what they should get. These types of policies are very much on the "don't pay for much" side given how inexpensive they are. That said, my case is as clear-cut and well-documented as it gets, so as another posted shared, if Access America tries to act like true secondary coverage vs paying me as they promise and allowing me to pay them back if American Airlines actually comes through 100% (which is highly unlikely) then I will correspond with the California Insurance Commission - not something I look forward to since this is a huge time waste, but something I will do. The key thing to do with these policies is take the time to read the real coverage, never the high-level summary of benefits, since the summary always makes it sound like everything is covered when we all know there are exceptions and exclusions hidden everywhere in these things. | Review: | access america a scam i have read many complaints about access america and i just want to add to the chorus. my mother (90 years old) has cancer; we bought tickets to take care of her for a month; she got worse and began to cry when we said we were leaving (after being here a month) so we cancelled our flight and bought a later ticket. there was nothing in the short description when we bought this insurance that mentioned pre-existing conditions for someone who is not flying. instead the impression was that it provided "peace of mind" and was good for cancellations period. later when talking to them i find out that the pre-existing condition also refers to family members who did not purchase tickets. by the letter of the law they are right, but by all that's moral and reasonable and by the initial understanding of someone buying insurance on line there is nothing to indicate that it would be so difficult to obtain any kind of refund. | Review: | Flexibility was key for us My wife and I were traveling for an international adoption. Our first trip was cancelled, due to a hospitalization of the child we were adopting. The cost of the cancellation was the same as the cost of the travel insurance, so making a claim didn't make sense. We were allowed to cancel our insurance (same day as travel), nothing to fill out. We purchased insurance for our 2nd trip - again, the trip was cancelled. The cost of cancellation was going to be larger, so AA sent us the claim forms quickly. We scheduled a 3rd trip (whcih again was quickly cancelled), finally we were departing on our 4th trip. There ended up being no rescheduling fees, so we wanted to move our existing insurance from trip #2 to trip #4. A call to AA, and we were told we would need to provide our old and new itineraries. There was a need to expedite the process, which AA was able to complete (we were leaving in less than 48 hours). Through all stages, the customer support reps were very friendly, informed, and concerned with making sure that we received the coverage we had purchased. They could have very easily denied our request to change our coverage (since the original trip would have taken place 3 weeks earlier), but they changed our coverage with very few questions. | Review: | Disappointing service I have reached an age in life where buying trip insurance has seemed to me to be a prudent idea, and I have used AccessAmerica as well as several other companies. In late December 2009 I bought insurance to cover a trip that I was proposing to take in March 2010, to visit friends, but within the US. Then, in an entirely unrelated development, but shortly before my planned departure, my brother underwent back surgery. When his recovery unexpectedly developed serious problems, I of course cancelled my trip to go visit him, and so informed the airline and the insurance company. Unfortunately the complications that set in during his recovery grew worse, and about a week after my cancellation, he died in the hospital. Shortly thereafter I put in a claim to seek a refund of my air fare -- the only expense I had incurred. After several months, howevr, AccessAmerica denied the claim, on the grounds that the problem that had led to his surgery was considered a "pre-existing condition." In a sense that was true, for his back problems had begun several years earlier. Still, the decision made by the doctors to have him undergo surgery was made well after my purchase of the insurance. If you have a family member with a terminal disease and you plan to buy travel insurance just in case you might need to cancel a trip and hope to get a refund, don't count on Access America. They seem to have a major time delay getting all the documents processed through their imaging system. We received a call from our son telling us our daughter-in-law was in the hospital and in surgery. It should have been a 2 hour but was already 7 hrs. He called back shortly and said she had stage IV cancer and he needed us there asap. He was crying so hard it was hard to comprehend it all. We were in a small country that has 3 airlines with one flight out and one in each day. We tried all airlines and the only one we could get out the next day was first class to dallas and coach on to our destination. We had to get out. It ended up that I was at our sons for two months caring for my daughter-in-law while my son worked. I called Access America while I was there and they said all I needed was a doctors letter that we were needed there. I talked to her doctor and that was no problem. However due to her illness I was unable to start the claim until 5 months later and had to leave again before finishing the paperwork. My daughter-in-law died 2 months later. I stayed with our son for some time. All total in 8 months I was home for 3 weeks. When I finally filled out the paper work, attached my doctor's letter and sent it in it was 4 months after she died. We were with our soon for the holidays when I got a call from Access America saying they would not pay for our airfare from the little country to our son's home (that was all we were asking for) because I didn't have enough documentation that I was needed there. Of course it is a very crowded site, with many options to check, and apparently uncheck. Why should I have to uncheck something I don't want to pay for? I even looked for the box this time, and didn't see it. I only found out I was being charged after check out, on my receipt. Then, of course, one has to call Orbitz and be transferred to Access America to cancel something you never wanted in the first place. I'm sure most people just go through and pay and don't notice, and Access America and Orbitz split up your $39. It should be illegal to have any box prechecked on any e commerce site. I wish I hadn't. It would save me money, time, and headache. Apparently, AA doesn't recognise death proved by the death certificate as a ligitimate excuse to cancel your flight. AA sent a three-page questionary to my mom. I called, explained she's dead and there's no way the stupid paperwork can be filled out. Well, two month later my mom receives another letter from AA. They write, Dear, my mom's name, since we have not received the supporting information to your claim. Your claim has been closed. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.... Well, that would be difficult to do for a person whose body was cremated three month ago. I feel like Access America pooped on my front porch and then knocked at the door to ask for toilet paper. | Review: | i thought they were great i purchased insurance and had to cancel my trip due to a pre-existing condition. however, i read my policy when purchased and was aware that was not covered, i did call to double check and the young man i spoke with was very polite and knowledgeable. it appears that a lot people do not read their policies. i also took advantage of reading the policy online when i purchased from the airline. they do say limitations apply. as far as im aware there has been no reason to accuse of fraud. i also checked the BBB website, nothing bad on there. if they are such a bad company why no reports on BBB?? i have reported a complaint about another business and it was valid and BBB posted it. so it would appear no complaints are valid on the BBB website which should tell people something. maybe the problem is not with Access America but people who assume or do not read their policies. just because YOU want a claim paid does not mean it should be. i saw so much negative and wanted to put my good experience in. we are also only able to hear one side of the story on here which i dont really like. you have no way of knowing what is really going on or what really happened. My brother sent me an email three days later telling me that my mom's health was in serious trouble...the following week, she was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer. | Review: | Access America is Fraud We purchased this "insurance" through JetBlue last May when we bought tickets to travel to Washington D.C. for August. In early July, my wife suddenly started having headaches and a CT scan found a mass. To make a long story short, she had an emergency craniotomy and a diagnosis of brain cancer. Of all the things to deal with I went about cancelling the trip. Since we had the insurance I figured it would be no problem. I filed the claim and received some forms back. I filled them out includinga letter from her doctors and the hospital explaining the situation. Bottom line is that the claim simply keeps getting rejected for lacking some small piece of information (how much do they seriously need to know?). As to pre existing conditions they have very plain language of what this means and a specific policy to include this for coverage, as do all insurance providers, if purchased when trip is deposited or a few days after. Online sites do not normally give you this option. I was going to a seminar in Dallas and two days before I was to leave I began with fever and chills. I went to the Dr. who prescribe antibiotics for two infections and said it would be wise if I didn't travel. I called Access America who emailed me the forms to be filled by myself and the Dr. I sent them off and within a week was reimburseed for the ticket. I had no communication with the company except thru email and was even able to check the status of the claim everyday. | Review: | Fraud I booked a trip to Italy this past May. My father who has a history of lung cancer developed pneumonia and died. He was working and functioning up to the week of his death. He had had cancer for nearly 4 years. They denied the refund of the trip because he died from a "pre-existing" condition. How can there be a pre-existing condition to death? This means that no matter what a person dies of, unless he was hit by a bus, there will be no coverage. Worse than that is that the plain language of their contract does not exclude death as they claim, but to prove this I would have to spend thousands to sue them. As it turned out, my father became suddenly ill (vomiting blood, etc.) and was hospitalized. I decided to move up my travel date. I checked with AA first to be sure I was covered...they said yes. Contennintal charged me an additional $770 to rebook. When I filed my claim, AA denied it saying my father's illness was a"prexisting condition". My father's only preexisting condition was old age.This was an acute condition and therefore a legitimate claim and they knew it!. | Review: | Made the Worst Experience of my Life Even Worse My horror story took place in May 2006 but everyone needs to be warned. My 80-year-old mother became ill while we were on an Amazon River cruise and had to be hospitalized in Manaus, Brazil. Although the medical staff were wonderful and caring, the intensive care unit in the middle of a yellow fever area had no a/c or even windows or even screen on the windows. After days and days of pleading, Access offered "economy" class" tickets to the US when my mother recovered as she was receiving totally acceptable care. Access finally offered to arrange a medical air evacuation if I gave them, from Brazil, a $50,000 credit card deposit - who has that? They eventually agreed to bend their rules and take cash (Thank God for living in a small town with a home-town bank who trusted me for the paperwork on the loan!!!). After fighting them for 10 days I got my mother air lifted to the US but by that time she had slipped into a coma and had been placed on life support and dialysis. She bravely fought her way off the machines for 17 days in the US before I lost her. I spent over 9 more months arguing with Access over every aspect of coverage - with them paying virtually NOTHING - Every time I spoke with one of their employees I had to repeat the entire strory and NEVER got to talk to the same person more than twice. JUST THROW YOUR MONEY IN THE TOILET - much less painful and just as effective as Access America's insurance. Comments [ 0 ] |

I had all needed information, documents from the airline that bags were delayed, receipts, boarding passes, etc. I figured this is going to be easy but boy was I wrong. After filing for claim and sending all the required docs (and more) I got a letter from Access America that they require more docs and some docs that I already sent. They claim that what I had was not sufficient, they needed more from the airline. What I had was the only thing the airline would provide to me (Lufthansa so not some 3rd world country airline). So basically, they rejected my claim. I think they do this to everyone and rarely actually pay out the claim. Access America would not accept my claim because they did not know the cause of death. After explaining the cause to the representative they still needed an incalculable amount of details, all of which were hard for me to deal with and given the situation I thought it was not worth it. To me I was better off forgetting the $2000.00 reimbursement. This is the maximum amount of reimbursement they would give me, even though my travel expenses were nowhere NEAR this amount. I spend more than $2000.00 traveling with my family every time, given I have a very large family. My sister had passed away at the age of 49. Nobody expected her to die. As painful as this was, dealing with this poor excuse for an insurance company was more painful. This hit my family hard and the fact that this company kept prying and wanting more details is simply sickening. It was not enough that I sent them the death certificate, they still needed more. Their needs are insatiable and they look for reasons, whatever they may be, not to pay your claim. I will never use their services again and I DO NOT recommend anybody else does. They told me they would have ground transportation waiting for me but I had to find my own. I have sent copies of everything you can imagine and they say the receipt for the cab is not good enough and that my policy does not cover lost luggage. The policy they sent me makes it appear that it covers everything. This is a insurance scam in my eyes. They collect premiums but dont pay claims. Save your money or buy from someone else. I called Access America and told them it happened later the day I purchased the tickets and Insurance. They said NOTHING about not being covered on the first day. My credit card was charged the first day. On page 15 of 26 pages of claims information it was stated. The rep who took my claim instructed me to fill out all the papers she sent to me, not telling me that I was not covered!!!! We filled out all the papers... and there was tons,got the Dr. to fill out papers and sign his papers and sent it in. They again contacted me and told me I needed to send proof of purchase and the flight itenerary. I sent it to them...all this time assuming it was covered. NO Word for six weeks...finally I called them and got a snotty customer rep on the line and she simply said " you were never covered" I called back several times to ask for a supervisor and all the times they either left me burn on hold or dropped the call. I was so mad at such poor service and professionalism. I finally got a call back from a Michele who said I could appeal on their website. She was not apologetic at all for their leading me on. AND Quess what?? No place to appeal on their website...like I was surprised. Access America flight insurance is a joke and scam. They need to have that information up front or at least tell you that the first time you call in,instead of leading you on and asking you to fill out all those papers and being so rude!! I had a flight cancel for mechanical reasons (rule 240) late at night and lost my single night hotel charge as a result. When I tried to collect on my insurance they refused because the "flight 240'd" and "because the hotel was prepaid"!!! What??? | Review: | Denied claim on a technicality Purchased travel insurance for my wife and myself for a trip to Europe we had planned in the spring of 2006. The coverage purchased included a refund of plane ticket costs in the event of illness of a family member. My mother became ill with what was diagnosed as the beginnings of neuro-vascular senile dementia, along with other age-related health problems, in February of 2006 and we canceled our trip plans due to that. One of the requirements in filing a claim for plane tickets cost reimbursement was providing written information from my mother's physician on one of Access America's claim forms. Due to the way one of the form questions was worded and the way her physician responded on the form, having to do with recent treatment dates for the condition that prompted our trip cancellation, it appeared that he had treated her for that particular development previously. This was not the case. As with many elderly people starting to experience various health problems, my mother had certainly had doctor's visits within the time frame the form inquired about, but certainly not for the catastrophic condition she had quickly developed in February. No amount of phone discussion or contacts to Access America in writing could correct the fact that mother's physician had simply listed the office visit dates of her most recent appointments, as requested on the form, for regular checkups and other treatments. Access America used a clause in the insurance contract about pre-existing conditions to deny the claim. The customer service people at this company were rude, unprofessional, and seemed absolutely determined to deny the claim at all costs based on a misunderstanding on a form. Any attempts to file an appeal on the denial was in itself a nightmare, since it's "handled by a different department" than who you purchase the stuff through, with a completely different address, phone numbers, and customer service people, if you can call it service.
